Combined Choirs of CCHC at First Presbyterian Church, Christmas Concert 2021

The Community Choirs of Huntington County is a non-profit organization that has been providing a quality choral experience to children and adults of Huntington County in Indiana for 27 years. The Community Choirs of Huntington County is a music performance program emphasizing music skills and understanding through choral music experience. Rehearsal and performances of quality musical literature form the foundation of our instruction. The choir exists to artistically enrich the lives of the children, their families and the community.

History

In 1992, a group of interested community members began formulating plans to start a children’s choir. Their commitment and enthusiasm in wanting to provide this kind of musical experience for children resulted in the Children’s Choir of Huntington County, which began their first season in the fall of 1993. The most recent change has been a realignment of our name to better suit our fit within the community and the choral opportunities being provided by the organization. Through the generosity of Huntington University, the choir holds rehearsals in the Merillat Centre for the Arts.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to lead children and the community toward a deeper appreciation of beauty and creativity through excellence in the performance of choral music.

Curriculum

CCHC is an enriched learning environment designed to provide a rewarding musical experience for each participant. Masterpieces of music from all styles and periods form the foundation for musical learning and serve as the basis for the curriculum.  We believe that, “Children should be led to musical masterpieces by means of musical masterpieces” (Zoltan Kodaly).  Since the best musical experiences for singers are inherent in great music, the Community Choirs of Huntington County repertoire includes music which reflects a commitment to this kind of literature.  Folk music, popular, and patriotic music are also included.  In addition, it is a goal to commission composers to write special works for the choir. Concepts about music (melody, rhythm, harmony, timbre, dynamics, form, style, and performance practice) and musical skills (vocal technique, theory, sight reading, ear training, etc.) will be taught systematically throughout the rehearsals. All participants will work toward proficiency in reading music.

Goals

  • To foster the personal and social growth of choir members and promote their sense of self-worth, self-esteem, accomplishment and pride
  • To expose choir members to the values and beliefs of other cultures and societies
  • To attain the highest level of excellence in public performances
  • To maintain choir membership open to persons of ALL racial, cultural, religious and economic backgrounds
  • To contribute to the cultural life of Huntington, Indiana, and surrounding communities
  • To support school music programs by providing an organization which can add to the musical experience received in school choirs
